| Crossing historic bridges
More than 10,000 bridges tell the history of Chinese dynasties. Here, thousands of stones crossed time; thousands of people crossed the waters. In Shaoxing, through bridges and water, people and history connect with each other. |

Five meters in height and 3.2 meters in width, Bazi Bridge crosses a total distance of 4.5 meters. |

Witnessing living history
Here behaviors, customs and habits are the same day after day, year after year… Ancient times are still on the waterside…people living and living traditions. Shaoxing does not tell the history, but make you experience it through the daily lives of its people. |
There are five conserved Historic Blocks which are kept as they used to be and local citizens still live in a very traditional way. The local residences were originally built at the end of Qing Dynasty and are well-kept and consistent with each other. The typical architectural style of Shaoxing local residences is a mix of black, white and gray. In the Historic Blocks, you can experience the authentic lifestyles of local people. For example, you’ll see local women washing clothes in the canals beside their houses; vendors selling vegetables and fruits on the street; craftsmen making furniture from wood; and the elderly fanning coal stoves to cook. This is not a museum; it’s history that’s alive!

| Cruising the ancient canals on a Chinese gondola
Shaoxing is the only place in China, and in the world, where you can take a cruise on a Chinese-style gondola called a Wupeng boat. The Wupeng boatmen are precious witnesses of ancient China, still ailing in the narrow canals of the historic blocks within Shaoxing’s city center. |
Wupeng boat (black-awning boat)
The Wupeng boat is a unique transport mode in the ancient water city of Shaoxing. The awning is painted in black, hence the name. The Wupeng boat is a special feature of Shaoxing, and steered by men with both their hands and feet.
Shaoxing offers different routes and locations for Wupeng boat tours. You may take a Wupeng boat tour on East Lake, or board one at the Dayu Tomb, Lu Xun Native Place, or Keyan Scenic Area. They are also available to cruise the ancient canals in the center city historic blocks, or to circumnavigate the entire moat around the ancient city.
| Tasting the traditions
Shaoxing yellow rice wine and its museum offer you a special opportunity to taste the tradition. You will savor its mellow flavors, dating back to the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC). This wine is also an ingredient in delicious and unique Shaoxing dishes. |
The Museum of Chinese Yellow Rice Wine, opened in 2007, is a complex of buildings for various activities based on yellow rice wine. The main building is the Exhibition Hall where you’ll see and even participate in the production process of different types of the yellow rice wine. In addition, you will better appreciate the related poems and paintings while sipping a little of this famous wine. In the southwest corner of the complex, there is a Wine Street and Waterside Houses especially for wine-tasting, dining and shopping.
