What is a Wupeng Boat?

The Wupeng boat is a unique transportation mode in Shaoxing. Each boat is about four meters long and one meter wide. The cover of the boat is painted black; hence it is named Wupeng (black awning) boat. The boat can generally hold two or three persons and six at most. The way to row the Wupeng boat is unique. The boatman sits on the stern, padding the boat with his feet and hands. He holds the oar in both hands to control the direction of the boat. The awning can be opened on a fine day to enjoy the beautiful scenery along the banks of the river or canal. When the boat with its small and light body sails on the surface of water, you may have fun slapping the water with your hands and it’s easy and safe.
